Haskap Nutritional Information

Haskaps have long been valued for their health-promoting qualities. Their original name, “hasukappu,” is a word from the language of the Japanese indigenous Ainu people, meaning “berry of long life and good vision.” Their reputation is in fact well-deserved, as tests show that haskaps have extremely high levels of antioxidants. They are particularly high in anthocyanins, polyphenols, and bioflavonoids.

Haskaps rate higher in total antioxidants than blueberries, cranberries and black currants. They are loaded with vitamin C, and contain plenty of vitamin A, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, and manganese.

The list of claimed health benefits from eating haskaps is long, and includes prevention of cardiovascular disease, lowering blood pressure, cancer prevention, anti-aging, and vision. Whether any of these specific claims can be verified or not, all of their good qualities have earned haskaps a place in the list of “superfoods.”
